Prayer and Promise

Every hopeful prayer,
Every decision to keep on going,
Every attempt to shake it off,
Every thought that “I’ll be OK”

Had better also be a promise
To everyone who will be
Deported, or jailed,
Or denied medical care

Otherwise you mock the God
Who is always on the side
Of the powerless,
The people on the margin.
