A Table Meditation

A shared meal is an image which Jesus used frequently for the Reign of God, of God always present with us, God always active in our lives. On his final night with his friends, he took bread and wine, said the traditional blessing, and equated himself with the meal. He told us that when we eat and drink, when we pray a blessing over our meal, he is with us.

And so this evening we gather to eat and drink, to be together as the community of believers, the Church in this time and place, the hands and feet and voice of God here and now.

So let us take time to remember how God has been alive in our lives, and where we still need to find God:

Let us be mindful of where we have found God in our lives, and give thanks.

Silence

Let us be mindful of where God has seemed absent, and ask to find God’s presence.

Silence

Let us be mindful of how we might be God’s presence in someone’s life.

Silence

Let us pray:

Eternal One, maker of the sun and the earth, we thank you for this world which provides enough for everyone to eat. We thank you for the people who grow, harvest, ship, and prepare our food. We thank you for the families, friends, and community that share our meals. We know that not everyone has enough to eat, and we pray for dedication and passion to change that. As this food strengthens our body, strengthen also our bonds one to another. In the name of Jesus, the Anointed One, who instructed us to remember him whenever we gather to eat and drink.

Amen
